Assateague Island Story Behind My Lens

The Story Behind My Photography: Assateague Island
Along Maryland’s eastern shore, where the Atlantic Ocean meets miles of sandy beach and quiet marshland, lies a place that continues to draw me back—Assateague Island.
It is a place where the wild still feels wild.
The wind moves gently through the marsh grass. Waves roll onto the shore. Migrating birds pass overhead, deer move quietly through the landscape, and the famous wild ponies wander wherever they please.
They don't belong to us.
We are visitors in their world.
And that's part of what makes photographing Assateague so special to me.

Waiting for the Moment
Whenever I arrive on the island, I bring my Nikon camera and telephoto lenses. I never know exactly what I'm going to photograph.
That's the excitement.
I may start the day looking for the wild ponies and end up watching a bird in flight, a deer moving through the marsh, or the changing colors of the sky over the ocean.
I walk, I watch, and I wait.
Wildlife photography isn't about forcing a photograph to happen. It's about being patient enough to recognize the moment when it does.
Sometimes it's only a few seconds.
A pony lifts its head.
The sunlight falls across its coat.
The wind catches the grass.
For just a moment, everything seems to come together.
That's when I raise my camera.
Click.
The moment is gone—but the photograph remains.
A Place That Slows You Down
There is something about Assateague that makes me slow down.
Standing near the shoreline with the breeze coming off the ocean, listening to the waves crash against the beach, I can forget about everything else for a while.
The island has its own rhythm.
Depending on the season and conditions, sea turtles and seals may make their way onto the shore. Birds arrive and leave with the changing seasons. The ponies continue their quiet routines through the marshes and along the beaches.
You never really know what you'll encounter.
That's what keeps me looking.
Respecting the Wildlife
When I'm photographing the ponies and other wildlife, I keep my distance. I try to stay at least 40 feet away whenever possible so I don't disturb them while they're grazing, resting, or moving through their surroundings.
My telephoto lens allows me to photograph from a safe distance while letting the animals remain wild and undisturbed.
For me, getting the photograph isn't worth disrupting the moment.
The best photograph is the one that allows the animal to simply be an animal.
From the Island to My Artwork
When I return home, the journey isn't quite over.
I look through the photographs I captured and begin the editing process. I work with my original images carefully, preserving the feeling of the moment while bringing out the details, light, and atmosphere I experienced on the island.
Some photographs become canvas artwork.
Others inspire T-shirt designs and other products.
But every piece begins the same way—with a real journey and a moment I experienced through my camera.
That's what I want my photography to share.
Not just a picture of a wild pony.
Not just a picture of a beach.
But a feeling.
The sound of the waves.
The salt air.
The quiet marsh.
The anticipation of waiting for the right moment.
And that instant when you realize you've captured something you'll remember long after you've left.
Why I Keep Coming Back
Assateague Island is one of my favorite places to photograph because no two visits are ever exactly the same.
The light changes.
The seasons change.
The wildlife changes.
And the moments are never guaranteed.
So I keep coming back with my camera, searching for the next moment worth capturing.
I'm always on a journey.
Sometimes that journey takes me across the country. Sometimes it takes me across the ocean.
And sometimes, it's a drive to the eastern shore of Maryland to stand on a beach, watch a wild pony wander through the marsh, and wait for the light to be just right.
This is the story behind my photography.
I travel to experience these places.
I photograph the moments that move me.
And I turn those memories into photographs and artwork that I can share with others.
Welcome to JeffHTravel—where the journey becomes the photograph.
